out.  The assemblage followed going down the grand staircase between a line of soldiers standing at salute, all most impressive—  I happened to go down along side of Mr. Whitlock, whith [[with]] whom I chatted a few 
moments, also "rubbed elbows" with Cardinal Mercier in the same group, he was a commanding & picturesque figure in his scarlet robe, but was very genial & chatty with Mr. W. & Mrs. Whitlock.

It was certainly a memorable occasion, and most spectacular, as everyone was "dressed up", - I had on my "chapeau de form" or high hat, having followed Jerry's advice and invested in one — following the crowd out, I got into my car - which is the proper thing on such occasion, and drove back to the Britannique.
