and now I am hoping that all is well, though I know so little, and must waite [[wait]] so long for further news. If I could only get back - but even the channels of return are closed. Though I am tempted to stow myself away somewhere on a returning ship - and reach home, home, the only thing worth while - that and being worthy of one. The cable came through all right, reached me on the 11th - it was not dated so I do not know when it was sent or when the operation took place, can only surmise, and hope for the best outcome, and rely on Marion keeping up her spirits, and grip, as she has so nobly done all along—

Things here are going slow, it has been impossible so far to get any appointment from George, in spite of all official pressure brought to bear, he is the busiest man in Europe, and propbably looks on sitting for a portrait, as useless,- he is soon leaving for France for a change, and I don't know what will happen. I may leave to follow him, may have to give him up, its all terribly uncertain and nerve racking.

Have you heard - that Decamp - discouraged over the situation - threw up the job of painting the Peace Conference, and has returned home!! Don't say anything about it outside, but that is the fact, and it has created a great sensation and disturbance in our circles - that meant giving up a $50,000 job I guess, besides the disappointment and failure - but he could not make the conditions work out—

Whether I will have to give up one or more subjects from sheer force of circumstances I don't know yet.

I got your cable yesterday, the day before I sent you a cable order for $200
