two little children looking for their mother. Most of the time they have nothing to eat for some time. 
  In the afternoon M. Blanc and I go to the hospital and talk to the wounded. We give them writing paper. Of course, many of them cannot use it, but the nurses write a few words for them. Many of them die while we are watching them. Poor fellows. They are very much interested in telling me about the fighting and how they fought right along the side of some special American friend they had made. There is just now a boy 18 years old (French) in the hospital. He has been there five days. Very seriously wounded, but he is now getting along nicely. He is young and strong and I am sure he will pull through alright. He, with many others, in the first week had pushed forward quite a ways and then the regiment was pushed back and partially surrounded. He was among the first wounded. This we had
