October 11

My dear Emma and Children, I think that today is Thursday but I do know for sure. For the last two or three days I have had a very busy time with the foyer work. Just the kind of work I had pictured. Last Wednesday word came to Montmireille for me to report at Head quarters at once (Epernay) I was sent to a place about six miles from here near the line. Two little donkeyswere waiting for me to help in my work. The next day the French Director sent me where I wanted to go.. A ride in an auto brought me near my place then I walked saw the Captain deliever my message while the cannon were boming overhead and the shots humming through the air. It was not dangerous for us because the Bosches were on the run which you know by this time, it was a great sight to see them moving their army so fast beyond a canal which we could see quite plainly then I walked towards a great city in the North of France and saw the wonderful Church which has been much destroyed, in the desolate city there was nothing but ruins, and wine such fine wine so I went beyond the Church and in a hastily arranged courtyard many soldiers were gathering all the time. The colonel invited me to lunch and for the first time I had to try this wonderful wine which made me a little zig zag for awhile I am afraid. After wandering trough this beautiful city for a while and around the Church I went home with my mind made up to start a foyer du soldat in it then today and Sunday I took my two little donkeys loaded them with chocolate and coffee and gave it to the soldiers in front of the Church (that is Thediricol) (Monica's note: I think that strange word is "cathedral"- the Cathedral of Reims, doubtless Solon felt that it would be censored if he wrote it correctly for of course then their position would be given)
