Dear Paul just about the time you receive this letter it will be your birthday. You are 18 years for sure now and this year that has about past has been a great year of experence for you if the war had continued I would have liked nothing better then to have seen you over here. it has been a grate life (if you don't weeken) When I left Raine in the month of October I hardely h [[strikethrough]] ever had my cloths off a wash once in a wile[[strikethrough]] while. nothing but cannon shots explosions of all kind trench littl holes to hide in and mud mud from head to foot my two little donkeys did not last long. I had to leave them. after that I took Potluck with any thing and any body that came along, I was ordered to keep near the trenchs  never to come[[strikethrough]] go back with a regiment.
