                                              April 7
Dear Emma and children,
We have been here now about five weeks, the school is filling up fast. We are sending the beginners to Boane in order to have strong classes here in the three arts. There is some kind of change going on now in our relation to the army. All instructors will be taken in the army, given no official rank but must dress like an officer. Will know in a week or ten days just what they are up to
I gave my class a composition to day, it is to embelish this building (the front of it with sculpture I have four or five strong men and theyif they come foreward we will give them a chance to execute the work. The idea will be to make something expressive of the building is now being used for today for the first time .
The weather was fine right from the beginning from sun up. I will join the outdoor sketch class, black and white which goes out twice a week. This will get me out in the open once in a while and also give me a chance to learn to make better drawings, I hope. We had two lectures today, one on French history the other on the Louvre. We have seven or eight every week, so you see we are busy from [[?]] seven thirty A.M. until 10.30 P.M. every day. The men are getting real college rather university course in the Fine Arts. By next week my work will be pretty well arranged then will go and see Aunt Sophie. Mr. Warren is [[crossed-out]] a [[/crossed-out]] very nice to me. There are a great many fine men studying here. I pray that you are all well, very well and the garden is growing fine, have you any salad yet or other good things to eat?
Lots of love and kisses, Solon
