Baracoa Cuba
May 21 / 15

My Dear Mr Harrington

It occurs to me that the Yutis [[hutia]] may be worthy of Scientific investigations to ascertain its value for inoculation for obtaining serum for medical purposes my attention was called to this posibility by reading an ad asking for Guinea Pigs, The Yutis is a prolific animal and can be secured in considerable quantities by going to the wild sections of Cuba, they are very domestic, never leaving the house in which they are raised. Rats will quickly vacate premises where a yutis is installed. I also believe their skins are valuable for gloves. In fact some skins that were tanned by a Boston firm 7 years ago, were said to be of Superior quality for gloves. If you can get any information confirming these Ideas I would start raising them on a moderate scale, a Hundred or so, this[[?]] Yorker is still with one. Hoping you may return to Baracoa soon

Sincerely yours
W H Bemis
