85 West Indies, and from Mr. J.M. Bowers, collected at the Society Islands, Pacific Ocean. A collection of nearly 1300 microscopic slides of foraminifera, representing many of the government deep-sea sounding explorations was purchased of Prof. H. L. Smith, of Geneva, New York, in 1882, and a collection of carefully made preparations of American fresh water sponges was received, in 1883, from Mr. Edward Potts, of Philadelphia, as a donation. Although but few exchanges have yet been made with foreign institutions and naturalists, still many interesting collections have been obtained in this manner.
