                                  August 24th 1865

Know all men by these presents that I Samuel Beuts of the County of Carroll State of Maryland hold and firmly bound to the United States of America in the amount of one hundred dollars for the payment of which I bind myself my heir & Administrators firmly by these presents in this contract, that I agree to pay the person whose name is Subjoined (freed Laborers) the sum of (2) two cents [[strikethrough]] per [[?]] [/strikethrough]] each, for having Rail Road ties, that is [[strikethrough]] ? [/strikethrough]] they are to hew said R.R. ties two sides (8) eight feet long at said price each, this contract to be binding on each party for the period of (3) months. And it is also agreed between said parties that (25 per cent) twenty five percent is to be with held from the payment of said work until the termination of this contract. ---
