Washington, Aug 28th, 1865.

Know all men by these presents that I Samuel Beutz of the County of Carroll state of Maryland held and firmly bound to the United States of America in the sum of two hundred ($200,) dollars for the payment of which I bind myself my heirs and administrators firmly by these presents in this contract,: that I am to pay the persons whose names are Subjoined (Freed Laborers) the sum of Seven (7) cents for each railroad tie they shall cut and score. The ties to be (8) eight feet long, two sides. Said Freed Laborers agreeing to remain with me for the period of three (3) months and with the express understanding that I am to retain twenty five (25) per cent of the amount earned until the termination of this contract Nov 25 1865 when all the wages due them shall be paid them. Furthermore it is understood that these men are to provide for themselves. This contract to be broken only by mutual Consent
