Washington, September 2d, 1865.

Know all men by these presents that I Samuel Beuts of the Carroll State of Maryland, held and firmly bound to the United States of America in the sum of (200.$) two Hundred dollars for the payment of which I bind myself my Heirs Executors and Administrators firmly by these presents in this Contract. that I agree to pay the persons whose names are subjoined (free Laborers) the sum of (60 cents) Sixty cents per cord to cut wood by the cord, and bound themselves, this Contract to be binding on each party for the Period of (4) four months. And it is expressly understood that 25 per cent of said wages are to be retained by said Samuel Beuts until the termination of this contract. In the case of John Smith I am (said Samuel Beuts) to furnish quarters and Rations and pay at the Rate of (150.$) one Hundred and fifty dollars per year. for four months as aforesaid. this contract to be broken only by mutual consent.
