Washington, Sept 2nd, 1865.

Know all men by these presents that Samuel Beutz of the County of Carroll State of Maryland held and firmly bound to the United States of America in the sum of Two Hundred ($200) dollars for the payment of which I bind myself, my heirs, and administrators firmly by these presents in this contract; that I am to pay John Smith, (Freed Laborer) the sum of $12.50 cents per month, quarters, full substantial and healthy rations, and all necessary attendance in case of sickness. the said John Smith agreeing to remain with me until the 25th day of December 1865. It is plainly understood that said Smith is to perform the labor usually performed by teamsters and that I am to retain 25 per cent of his monthly pay until the termination of the Contract, the remainder to be paid at the end of each month and that the whole shall be paid at the termination of this Contract
