My Dear Mr. & Mrs. Pepper

The postal from Mexico came to hand all O.K. and I was glad to know that you had no trouble on the way & that neither of you were sick again.
When I left Uruapan I was "down in the mouth", to think that I would be all alone at the ranch. But such is life. Zimmerman came down the same week bringing a friend so I have not been alone, even if I have been lonesome. I have not done anything at the mounds since you left, but am busy trying to get out the small amount of [[rice?]] that we made. It will be after my return from the States (if I go) before I can do any work there. Christmas we invited the Doctor & his family out to spend the day. They declined however as it was Sunday & the Dr. was busy. The day passed off quite pleasantly with just us there. The dinner was good, if not very elaborate. The madam would have laughed at my attempt at pie crust. I was at it nearly an hour before I could make it roll out, + I never did get it thin enough. However it was brittle enough.

Reviewer: check the word transcribed as "rice" - doesn't really make sense...
