This petition of Joseph McCreary, late of Indianapolis, Indiana, now of the city of Natchez Miss, respectfully shows that on or about the first day of June 1865, he pruchased of Geo B. O'Kell, the stock, fixtures and goodwill of the City Hotel in the City of Natchez, and is now the landlord and proprietor therof. That the said hotel, at the time he so purchased the same, was held by the United States Treasury Department, as abandoned property, and said O'Kell occupied the same under a lease from the Treasury Department, for the term of one year from the first day of November, 1864, That the said lease, by and with the consent of the Treasury Agent of Natchez, was transferred to this petitioner at the time of said purchase. That at the time the said hotel was purchased as aforesaid it was very much out of repair, many parts of the building entirely uninhabitable, on account thereof, and was last going to ruin by reason of neglect. That the said O'Kell had made large repairs which permanently improved the property, and which were taken into account and paid for by this petitioner at the time of said purchase, and the petitioner has since laid out large sums in and about the
