the front who had invited us to carry on exploration work in Michoacan. We had to repack all of our baggage and transport it with a pack outfit to our destination, which was 75 miles south of the above named City. Mrs. Pepper as you know, had never been in the saddle until she took the ride to the corn fields while at your home. After leaving the train at Uruapan she was confronted with a 75 mile ride over some of the roughest country that I have ever seen. The poor food, and damp weather in Mexico City had given her stomach troubles similar to those that caused Covert to leave Mexico, and you can imagine what a trip of 75 miles on horseback would be to a person in that condition. She made the ride however, in two days, but it was more than most men would have attmpted.

While we were in camp Mrs. Pepper was taken with the swamp fever, which is so prevalent in the Tierra Caliente. She was sick was sick for a week, and then, while she was still dizzy from the affects of the fever, had to make the 75 miles to the Railroad. Since reading New York she has had a relapse but the fever seems to have been driven out of her system, or else it has spent its force, at all events, she is now on the road to recovery and a week or so ought to bring her around to her normal healthy condition.

We thought of you many many times while we were in Mexico, and this letter that I am writing you is the second that I have written since my return. I want to assure you that I have
