My dear Willoughby:-
Mr. Heye showed me your letter and I am sorry that there was a misunderstanding concerning the material that was to be sent in exchage for the baskets.
When I reached New York Saturday night I went to Mr. Heye's house and gave him a list of the material that you had decided upon. This was done according to my understandigdof the matter. It now seems that you intended the Madisonville material and the potsherds from the Mandan villages to form a basis ohr another exchange. I certainly thought that you intended to put in a few pieces of representative material from ehch place. Thus I explained it to Mr. Heye and that accounts for his attitude in writing you. It was not the amount or value of the material it was merely a desire to have Mr. Heye satisfied in this his first transaction.
Mr. Heye has just phoned me that he has sent you a check for the amount needed for the baskets. I hope that this will not complicate matters as Professor Putnam told me that the money should be sent in the form of a check made out to him. It will merely necessitate your indorsing it and passing
