MAY 29

Continued - Edward had to bring perfume, oil, filament, & a mirror to camp. - & W. his old suitcase. I brought my uke along & learned to play some tunes. In the mornings, X3 woke up at 5:30 & went crabbing - big, fleshy ones. At nite we couldn't sleep. What with prowlers from other huts - I remember as soon as Herb. heard prowlers, he swung his bat fiercely! And on Sun. aft., H & I found Shoichi sleeping, & we painted fantastic designs on his face with charcoal. I got scarcely 3 hrs. sleep early nite Sat. nite, W. slept on the lower bunk & woke up on the upper - a mystery.

con't. I'm saving this for the last - it's the best. Now I'm a full fledge snipe hunter. Jack, Haruto & Shizeo surely caught us (W., Keiji, George & I) succors. We were so tense when we imagined the snipes [[strikethrough]] to fly [[strikethrough]] were flying into the bag! If it weren't that the battery was weak, we'd have stayed longer thru 1 1/4 hours - & we returned home, hoping to make the 3 boys succors by going home & letting them chase the snipes for nothing! (Before leaving, I reserved the leg of a snipe!) But the mystery was that whenever we whistled, we got back an answer, & we thought it was whistling. I can't understand it yet.

about it - also wrote to CC Robinson for analysis. He once mistook me for Clarence Isui! Corresponding with Ellen Cha of Hilo - a real pen-pal - she can write so interestingly. So far (June 25) I have sent her for criticism "Answer," "Chrysanthemums" "Mirror" and "Tillers of Soil."
