JULY 8

Fri 1932. Morning brought a very very great disappointment to me! "Saplings" arrived & to my disappointment (very heart-rending) I saw that Genevieve Carter of Kan. school won Hawaii's poetry prize & a Jane Sakamura the short story prize. How sad! I had hoped since 1931 to win a state prize as Marjorie Waterhouse had [[top of page]] done! Oh! oh! But in the eve, I gave a last furtive search at St. Nick League's [[strikethrough]] hora [[/strikethrough]] honor roll & was rewared in finding my name under drawings, special mention for 2 drawings on Hawaiian summer hills

JULY 9

Sat. 1932
Marian left for town. Big party. Pay Day $10.55 - 11ยข hr. More about St. Nick - 3 jokes, all of Hawaii got their names on the special mention rolls. What an alliance we'd make. Hannah Yap - Prose, Ellen Cha, poetry, & moi, drawing. My poem "Companion" & my essay on flowers didn't place at all. I think only one contribution can place one month. More about Scholastic. I think I know why my poem didn't place - my themes! trite - hackneyed - outside of my knowledge. [[top of page]]Poems on simple everyday things are more likely to place. Why didn't Clopton tell me that? (But I think that's what he did when he said "You're getting the knack of it.," when I wrote the triolets, Rondeaus etc - all on simple themes.
