Sunday Mar 12 8:30 am.

Now that the wonder and joy have worn smooth, I am able to write calmly about the grand prize.

Thurs - stayed up till 11:05 to catch the news. No news (radio)

Fri - got up early to catch the news at 7 am. No news

Fri - 3 pm. Father said he had heard Doi and I, something about painting.

Rushed around to find someone with an airmail advertiser. Harry gave me an airmail letter from Pris. The news broke in her first word: "congratulations -" got hold of the advertiser at the newstand. Read all about the Doi-Tam tie; also my winning the L. & C. best landscape prize.

Sat - The Fri. Star Bulletin: "the painting shows rugged enthusiasm ... a dynamic feeling of the ocean .... blues, greens, browns in a wild landscape."

Those words are the most sadly gratifying thing. - All my great love for the beach, the wind, the dune grasses, the sky, my emotions aroused by the strangeness of this world. - all that part of my life I thought would never be expressed except, perhaps in writing (letters to Larry) did, after all, find their way into "Landscapes from a Shore" - according to the comments. and - "the wild landscape-" bon! That was the last word I expected, and the very first I would use if I were to describe[[strikethrough]]d[[/strikethrough]] in verse or letter the shores of the northeast coast.

Letters of congratulations from: Isami, John, Yin Kai (Sat)

Tues: from Ben Norris, Dorothy Skjonsby.
