July 9 '40 Notes - S.F. Beach (ocean) - gray, cold water, gulls, & a wide wide day. Hawaii is clear dark blue, warm, golden, and white sunlight. I came home from Carmel and looked at my oil paintings. The horizons could be sharper and the sea clearer. The white light and warm surf & hills are o.k. Completed a litho today (C.S.F.A. class) & was chagrined to find it not any better than my first litho done on Kauai a year ago untutored. I must go back to the Big Sur country. It is that of which I have been dreaming about for many years. Unpeople, wild, quickly changing. Walter Lindamer - a swell guy.
