Sunday Yamamoto Hotel, Hawi 13th July '41

No more despair, no more sighing for lost days - for today is all returned to me. The valley of Pololu revived the fight in me. The strong desire to paint with fury and with confidence, with strength, and with belief in the nobility of land rising and flowing.

It is wonderful valley. The black and red cliffs casting little islands into the sea, the green cliffs rising to blue mountains and falling into lush valleys, the pale green delta plain rolled into dunes of cinder and beach grasses, the black lava beach fringed with tawny yellow driftwood, the river, and the dark sea with long cross-lanes of waves.

I walked down the trail and saw the valley at its fullest, and returned a new person.
