In compliance with the request of Maj. Gen. Wood in circular No. 14 I have the honor to report that this school was established Jan. 22nd 1866 by Mrs. M.E. Gill ( my wife) under the auspices of the Freedmans Bureau. I being at that time the Sub. Com. of this place, the school grew so fast that on the 1st of Apr. I was compelled to assist Mrs. Gill.

The average number of pupils for Sept. was 25 boys and 35 girls, which would be about the number for the whole time since the school was established, Ages from five years to fifty-two, the highest being a man who has attended constant since Feb 15th with a view of becoming a teacher. Instruction is given in spelling, reading, writing & arithmetic. Most attention, as yet being given to the two first branches in which the pupils have advanced very rapidly, the school
