The cargo of the steamer [[strikethrough]] amounting to from [[/strikethrough]] and other vessels belonging to the A. C. Co leave about 6000 tons of freight at this port each year which is all handled by the Aleuts who make good porters working very actively and handling the goods well. They are also fair workmen at any of the odd jobs about the place.

They are quiet and innofensive and rarely quarrel except when under the influence of Quass which they make from sugar &c. A process which the learned from from the Russians. When there is no competition the A.C. Co restrict the quantity of sugar and use their influence in preventing the manufacture of the quass which renders the natives unfit for work, injures their health and is objectionable in every way.

On the Seal Is. the natives are poorer workmen at unloading cargo &c as they have had less practice but at sealing they are as a general thing hard & faithful workers.

A School is conducted during several months each year during winter. At the Seal Is a school is continued 8 months a year [[strikethrough]] in [[/strikethrough]] and only English is taught. At this station [[strikethrough]] only [[/strikethrough]] English is taught in the morning and Russian in the P.M. The schools are dept up by the A.C. Co. At the Is. there is some
