Re: new oil: the Sea
7/22/63
It isn't only the sea painted. Not only "glint and glare." Not only the place of the sea. Nor the look of it.
But the sea as symbol of all that lives, flashes, and dies. The sea as endless dialogue between what is and what may be.
What may be! The infinite possibilities that surely & unexpectedly shine at us in a flash. How to recall their brief presence without assigning them too finite a shape, or look.
And so one has to find a language that only parallels appearance.
And the painting, with its own current can come to life unhindered by the commonplace and the too-well-known, and can be the sea itself.
