If only the sea were not face
I could understand it purely
If one the field were not a place
But say, a time or a span
Knotted up on
A distance pointed at, a
Nothing at all, had a field
I would know it purely

If only the sea were not a surface
I could understand it purely.
If one the bay were not a place
but say, an arc of God,
or a vow without word.
Or as to a gull a span of grace
I would know it purely.
