Friday July 15 '66 - Started out at 10:30 for the Cascades - but only 20 or 30 miles out my eyes gave out - & had to put in at a motel in Foster, a most unattractive town. (lumbering) (& trucks & noise). Slept fitfully thru motorcycle din & gravel tire noises.

Sat July 16. Up at 9 & on our way to the Cascades. Very very beautiful country - wooded mountains & rivers & fine panoramas. Decided to do the McKenzie pass route today- & were amply rewarded. The first view of the peaks of the Sisters was breathtaking. All along the winding road up to the pass the lava beds jutted out- Stopped at West Lava Bed [[strikethrough]] area [[/strikethrough]] camping area for first close-up look at the lava & peaks. Then on to the summit at 5000 ft. to the observatory of lava rock for the most magnificent view of mountains I have ever seen. 360° peaks patterned in black & white snow patches. Lava everywhere. Then to Sisters - nice town- & a straight road to Bend, a large, bustling commercial center. Motel for the night - but before supper a drive back to town to Pilot Butte for a sweeping view of [[strikethrough]] Bend [[/strikethrough]] the n. e., s. to w mountains around the flat [[strikethrough]] area [[/strikethrough]] country.

Sun July 17. Another day of mountains. Thru Bend, to its park with wildfowl - then on to the so-called Century Drive, alias the 25 mi Scenic Drive, which as a scenic drive was disappointing. But here & there the views were very beautiful. One of the Sisters Peaks, & Broken Top
