Phoebe & Tamara and picked vegetables. The veg. garden is beautiful, and it supplies us with good quantities of salad greens and boiling greens, though the leaves & plants are still very small. Started to paint - watercolors (& with ink washes, etc) today & didn't stop till 10 or 11. At night, moved my things over to the gaslamp in the living room and with the darkness all around outside and the sounds of night, did 2 things about the ocean.

[[strikethrough]] Mon [[/strikethrough]] Sun. July [[strikethrough]] 6 [[/strikethrough]] 5 - I think of what spurs me to a more intense schedule of work. That Coe Kerr & Mrs Kerr liked my work when they came in last week; that Millie Cummings wrote that a Lewis Iselin had bought my "Moon & Sea" five minutes of its being exhibited in Rockport; that Jeff responded so personally to my drawings when he was here the other day. It used to be like this years ago with Edith Halpert, the museums, and the then new artist friends in N.Y., [[strikethrough]] Cape Cod [[/strikethrough]] Boothbay Harbor, Monhegan etc. Now the Monhegan artists know one another so well they actually don't look at one another's work anymore. To boat to see Schlangers & Meiselmans off. Gave them a box of: arenaria, potted, from the scree off Jan's, a tiny starfish on a piece of pink beach glass, a box of limpet shells, turned upside down to reveal their dark oval pattern. Then to White White & Little White Head where we made drawings. Found some tiny chanterelles on the trail, the first of the summer. Mike dropped in after supper. Worked on white acrylic & ink drawings until 11 pm. Stars out tonight. Saw Arcturus.
