Thurs July 9 '70 - The rose garden is in full bloom. [20?] blossoms, seen from the bathroom window, is a bold sight. W. Abbey most floriferous, as is the dk red sucker - which I should give a name to. Some visitors to studio. Supper for Alan & Joan & boys. Cod with [[strikethrough]] la [[/strikethrough]] black bean sauce (baked under foil) & chicken (baked - too dry) with lemon sauce, a green salad, pound cake. Later Marty & Lucille Metz joined us. Conversation as usual on Monhegan was mostly about people & things & events - hardly ever about the subjects that really interest me

Fri July 10 - a warm & sticky day. Tried to paint but the images got lost and the picture plane asserted itself to the point of design, which I abhor. Out to dinner at Krauses' with Martins & McCartins. The harbor in fog, & the usual talk. Who dares to bring up more significant [[strikethrough]] subje [[/strikethrough]] topics - the stuff that each lives on?

Alan & Joan left today. Dug up the white rugosa sucker & a [[strikethrough]] nepeta for her to take back.

Sat July 11 - Back hurt much. The deer's revenge. Stayed in, tried to work. Opened up the picture plane by the simple & usual device of [[strikethrough]] a [[/strikethrough]] horizon. The garden, esp. the fenced border, is full of bloom. But who will look at it besides myself? No one else. Letter today from Hantmans. Letter from Col Kerr. Nice & friendly. A very heavy but brief rain fell at 4 am. (Sun.) Very intense. Very good. A rain on the roof, [[strikethrough]] is a [[/strikethrough]] in the dark of the night, is a first class experience for one lying in bed.

Sun July 12. A hot humid sunny cloudless day. To Burnt Head, then to pool below, then to Gull Cove trail. Chanterelles, a deer, sketching, the walk [[strikethrough]] back in [[/strikethrough]] along Gull Cove where the gurgling brook tumbles its rocky way.
