Fri Aug 21 - The warm enveloping air has returned and by noon it was unbearable. Nevertheless, to Alice Stoddard's for some Cuthbert raspberry plants (6) with 2 buckets, (+ back with a carton), thru the village. Planted them in gully, + there found 5 very large berries on one of Alice's plants, put in 2 yrs ago! The size of these berries is alone worth the effort of getting + planting the thorny prickly things. Garden bearing so profusely it gives me a feeling of a [[strikethrough]] all [[/strikethrough]] a jungle wasting itself away with only its snails + ants + birds mindful of it. Malabar spinach is vining; beans are heavy + round + full, peas are hanging over the wire and the chard is a mile high in green. Around 5 Paces (+Mike, + John H.) showed up + we all went to Herb's, where Zero was too. Saw their (Herb, Zero) ptgs + drngs.
Sat 22nd Tried to paint - but the usual interruptions. Thought of the Canadian Rockies. Dinner tonight (roast leg of lamb) for Johns, Mollers, Arline + Emily, Helen Corbett, Werbes. Zucchini, chard, pesto-rice, etc etc. Small talk.
Sun 23rd. It begain to rain late last night + continued all day - to 11 pm. A good good soaking rain, the first in weeks, or months! The road became puddles. The whole island glistened. A good day, a good change. With boots + raingear, to Frances Kornbluth's for dinner (Loews) + Scrabble. Slept till 10 am.
Monday 24th - to come downstairs to find a string of callers - Mort B (refire, Schoolhouse) Roberto B. + 2 guests, Mr Hamlin for drawing for Temple U., + later Lucille + Marty Meltz, then Arline + uncle + aunt, with Shark steak, 2 tomatoes, + seaweed. Zucch. to them, + one to Chung for Helena Trollerman, chard for Riva Novey + Winnie, + 4 beets for Carl W. Wrote Bill Gerts re BMAS show.
