beach - a very interesting stretch of driftlogs + lava crags and a high rise to the north, with lava ledges + coves. By 8 the headland was dark, + the sky glowed in the sunset. Built a fire to warm ourselves + the supper of chicken + potatoes + beans in aluminum foil. Found jaspers + other rocks in the rock bordered margin between the yellow-bluffs + the sand. By 9 the tide had receded, leaving us + the gulls a wide beach + newly emerging lava reefs covered with seaweed.
Sat July 9 - A very full day. Spent the morning on the very very wide beach in front of the Sea View Motel. The tide was a "minus tide" by 10 am + we could walk a good hundred yards of beach to the surf. Gathered seaweed (duke) from the lava reefs. It was a grand + wild beach. Then to the South: first a very fine stage park (Heceta) where there was a rushing creek pouring into the bay. Many people, ankle deep in water, were looking for agates. We went under a very high bridge to have lunch by the shore of the stream. Heated a can of beans over a small fire. Then on: a remarkable, grand view of the long line beach below Sea Lion Cave - the long stretch of dune country. Very pale, very grey with spin drift. Drove on thru the turn of Florence (new, ugly) to the dune area - miles + miles of sandy country. A walk on soft rolling dunes to the ocean. Driftwood. Then back toward Yachats - to Purdy Cottages - everything perfect - cottage, view, beach, except there is no water!
