The day of days.

To have seen mountains at their uttermost. To see each formation clearly, from ocean base to snow-spotted summit. A hundred mountains from rounded green domes to painted peaks [[crossed-out]]caps[[/crossed-out]] to distant mounds beyond the dark silhouettes of single forms. A continent of mountains. An ocean of mountains and skies. The sea turned green later, after noon, toward Juneau. Icebergs - blue & white & fantastic in shape. Whales & dolphins. Spruce forests that made total green of a mountainside. A cold north wind and a fine sun. All day from sunrise to this hour the mountains floated by, to port & to starboard. All my years & sketches of mountains of all my years came into focus.

4:30 pm. still light. This afternoon, docked in Juneau at 3 p.m. a cramped town on the narrow base of tall mountains. Took bus tour around town & then 14 mi. to Mendenhall Glacier. A strange, huge, fierce place of ice. A blueness to the ice. Tall peaks behind. A stream in which swam salmon. After supper a walk around town.
