TO SAVE, FOR OUR CHILDREN AND THE WORLD, THE OLD MISSIONS AND OTHER HISTORIC LANDMARKS
[[italics]] Has already saved all that remains of the Missions San Diego, Pala, San Juan Capistrano and San Fernando.
Not a wall of either would be standing today, but for the work of the Landmarks Club, begun 1894. [[/italics]]

Broadway at 155th Street, New York

Dear Dr. Pepper:

You would forgive my long silence, apparently ungracious in view of the generous letter you sent for Founder's Day - my 64th birthday - if you could know what a long and often apparently hopeless fight for life I have had for the last year or more. I've been away from home for the most of 14 months and am just back - rather wobbly but with the light still burning and enough strength to get around pretty well.

I have been without clerical aid during all that time and have fallen hopelessly behind with my correspondence; but I valued your letter very much among the hundreds of other cheering messages from scientists, writers, artists and others from all over the world - including cables from the King of Spain, Concha Espina and a brilliant letter from Vincente Blasco Ibañez.

I, too, have pleasant memories of your little visit and of our trip to Isleta, and hope the time may come when we shall meet again. I truly wish you could have been with us on Founder's Day - it was a very beautiful occasion, vivid with love and gratitude and gentleness. They unveiled a bronze tablet dedicating "The Lummis Caracol Tower" - the unique structure I devised, the only tower in the world with a helix which has rooms around it, giving as much exhibit room in the tower as in all the rest of the great Museum.

My book - "Mesa, Cañon and Pueblo" - will be out next month; nearly 600 pp. with nearly 100 illustrations, and I am boiling full of new books and hope soon to begin putting them on paper.

Thanking you again for your good letter, and reciprocating your kind wishes,
Always your Friend,
