Sir,
The undersigned citizens of this city, have learned, that Maj G. S. Smith, who has had his Head Quarters, as Agent of the Freedmans Bureau in our midst, for many months past has been relieved from duty, would most respectfully request, that, he be retained in his present position. We have known Maj Smith, personally and officially, since he has been upon duty here, and we can sincerely say that in the discharge of his duties as a public officer, his dignity of bearing and uniform gentlemanly deportment and courtesy, has won the esteem of the entire community, without distinction of race of color.
