V. The number of Rations furnished during the month of July, to the sick and destitute in Howard Hospital was 2.480, to the children in the asylum 1.023, and employees 1.209 making the total of 4,4774.

VI. There were three schools in operation during the month, and all show an increase of attendance over last report. The schools at the Asylum have closed for the summer, will open the 1st of October. The continued increase of pupils during the past scholastic year, and the advancements made by them in their studies, are highly creditable to the Teachers, and conclusive evidence that the freedpeople are fully awakened to the necessity of improving themselves to meet their new and responsible duties.

VII. In regard to their ideas of the marital relation, there is much improvement. Owing  to former habits and customs, this matter
