these Acts you will please show to the Auditor of Public Accounts, as you stated in your letter to me, that you refused my receipts to the State Auditor, who stated that all such changes are illegal and should be stopped, by Chapter 73. laws of Mississippi, passed No. 1865.

It is very strange that the Auditor, should state to you, that the Sheriff was not authorized to collect but one dollar from freedmen, when he ought to know what the Counties is authorized to levy, a County, Special and Pauper tax, on the state tax.
