I proceeded up the river as far as Memphis, Tenn. making about forty-five landings on the way, and distributed six hundred and fifty bushels of corn, and five thousand two hundred pounds of meat, of which only 53 bushels were distributed in Mississippi, and the balance in Louisiana and Arkansas. 
I found very little destitution on the Miss. side, and was informed by nearly all with whom I conversed that both whites and blacks were getting along well, and that the prospect for the crops this season were much better,- notwithstanding the severe, and almost general overflow, - than they have been for some time past. The cases believed were principally widows with young children
