I temporarily stopped at compelled to sleep for the night out doors (although it rained part of the night) next day I made every effort to secure a suitable place for Office, board and lodging, but was unsuccessful, there are but few Houses of any kind in this place, I was informed that the Town was nearly totally destroyed by fire during the late War and the Inhabitants being now crowded in the few buildings yet remaining. From necessity, I was compelled to seek food and shelter some where else. I immediately reported by Letter the foregoing facts to you officially, respectfully requesting a modification of the orders locating Hd Qrs of my Sub-Dist. to Sardis Miss and that I would await your further orders at Sardis.
