DEPARTMENT OF STATE
Washington, D.C. 20520
March 19th, 1969

Honorable George A. Goodling
House of Representatives
Washington, D. C. 20515

Dear Congressman Goodling:

This is in answer to your letter of March 6 concerning the interest of the City of Carlisle in recovering the trophies earned by Jim Thorpe with a view to further honoring the great athlete in appropriate ways in Carlisle.

The decision to withhold the trophies from Jim Thorpe was made by the International Olympic Committee, which is a private international sports organization. The Committee, composed of representatives from participating countries, is entrusted with the control and development of the Olympic games. I sincerely regret to inform you, therefore that the United States Government cannot request the Swiss Government to return the trophies.

You may wish to suggest to the City of Carlisle that the United States Olympic Committee, Olympic House, 57 Park Avenue, New York, New York, 10016 would be the agency to take up the matter with the International Olympic Committee if it so desires.

I hope this information will be helpful to you. Please do not hesitate to write whenever you believe I can be of assistance.

Sincerely yours,

William Macomber
