TAMAN SARI 39
July 27 survey of Taman Sari batik village; roughly 40 establishments located on the west end of the ruins of the old Taman Sari "Water Palace" (palace itself dates from 1768, built by Hemengku Buwono I - was in use by 1st 3 Sultans over a period of 60 years, fell into disuse and gradually was taken over by petty retainers on 'abdi' of the Sultan - present families are descendants of these abdi)
in 1968, when I first visited T.S., were no "art galleries" - were apparently 4 or 5 perusahaan (factories) which made traditional batik jarik (wrapped sarong); I did not visit these, but did see number of older women sitting in groups in front of their houses doing tulis work on jariks (apparently put-out work from the perusahaan) - were at that time no younger people involved in the industry
the original 4 or 5 perusahaan date from about 1930 and their founders mainly dead now, being the parents of the present owners
