visit to Pak Puja, wayang kulit maker living in the villate of Gendeng in the neighborhood of Kasihan, kebupaten Bantul [[left margin note]] can take back road out of Kasongan [[/left margin note]] -- are approximately 10 households in Gendeng which make wayang kulit, with roughly 4 or 5 workers per household
all of the households received their original training from Pak Puja, who was a wayang maker for the kraton (which one?) before moving to the village
workers we saw at Pak Puja's house were young boys in the 14 - 18 age group -- they described themselves as 'students' studying with Pak Puja , (apprentices) who was their 'teacher'
little organized agriculture in the vacinity of Pak Puja's house, no well-layed-out fields, rows of crops, etc. -- this is, however, the end of the dry season
Pak Puja has been making wayang kulit since 1930, but said that things began to expand ("berkembang") about 1952 when boys of the village

began taking an interest in learning the craft
people from the kraton still order his wayang cuttings but, according to Mrs. K, prefer to paint them themselves since Pak Pujo uses goid paint but the kraton people prefer to use real gold leaf
Pak Pujos cuttings are considered the best & indeed I have never seen finer work
major raw material used is buffalo hide (cow hide having a tendency to roll up & curl) -- hides are purchased already cleaned from a nearby supplier who is also the headman of a certain village (?) -- Pak Pujo explained that the hides should be from a lean buffalo, as hides from fat buffalo have fatty opaque spots
hides are soaked and scraped [[left margin note]] [[diagram]] scraper [[/left margin note]] to make them thinner and more transparent
