CRAFTSMEN: begin about age 8 working the bellows

not till age 13 can begin swinging the hammers

acc. to Pak. Sastro Kajas men consider themselves craftsmen let & agr. a sambilan

SOC. ORG : -some women, work the bellows (we didn't see)-few women were seen around the village-acc. to Pak Wongso the women just take care of the house; some also buy vegetables, spices, snacks etc. in Wonosari & sell around village (saw two as three tiny stands-a small table only-covered with dry snacks; run by young girls on side of road coming in)

some men & women too take loads of iron tools and sell in Jakarta, Semarang, Cirebon, Kudus, & even Sumatra (see below)

most workers lived by the day
   bellows worker - Rp 200
   Hammerers - Rp 300-400, "according to strength 
   empu who works the tongs Rp 600-750,
   "according to his skill"

(very high wages, compared to other crafts)

only 20 empu in Kajar who are are considered good enough to get 750 Rp, (acc. to Pak Sastro)

gongsmith we talked to at Pak Sastros already, but other craftsmen seen [strikethrough/] [[?]] [strikethrough] mainly between 15-45 & probably couldn't do much heavy work past that age

work seems rather dangerous - to eyes, ears & spine - no protective equipment used at all

CO-OP - formed in 1962 with the "dorongan" (encouragement, push) from the Directorate of Coops in Wonosari

Pak Sastro has been head of Coop. since 1962 - seems to be a rich man - owns [underlined/] 15 hectares [underlined] of land - also owns 2 colts & [strikethrough/] an [strikethrough] one large truck which he [underlined/] rents out [underlined] to other enterprises.
