insert: interview at Semanang airport with Saptohudoyo, the well-known Jogja artist (airport shops in major cities, large home + shop with Polynesian style statues near Jogja airport)
Saptohudoyo gave a start to Ngadio, the first Kasongan artist to do ukir tempel - was 19 years ago acc. to Sapto
not clear whether Sapto invented the technique or Ngadjo did while working at Septos studio.
Septo enthusiastic now about a new village near Temanggung where he has taught ("men-didik") the people to do decorative pottery; the pieces made received an enthusiastic reception in higher govn circles! (Adam Malik and the President were mentioned as buyers) + Sapto has been "ordered" to put on an exhibition of the new wares at the Central Museum next month ((I believe Central Museum has such displays on 1st Wed. each mo - recheck)) - he is not yet selling the new stuff thru his own outlets (tho he does still sell some Kasongan pieces, bags by Iskandar Waworoentoe, kain gaya Sumba from Troso, the cloth from Om Yon's village plus his own latik designs)
I asked Sapto whether he taught the new villagers himself, or whether his anak buah + he did all the teaching himself, going to the village 9 times in all for this purpose
the Temanggung villagers formerly made only genleng - at first, acc. to Sapto, only oler women were willing to attend his classes +, acc. to him, he said, "that's all right, we'll just start with them" - gradually, however, the younger boys and men started attending the classes + later the "whole village" came (I think he said 68 people toward the end of the 9 sessions)
Sapto feels strongly that you shouldn't try to change people from their old craft to a new, but that the new should just be a supplement to the old
I mentioned that I was concerned
