women buy leaves at 100 leaves for 400Rp (uncleaned)
from 100 can make 8 hats
they must build up a stock of leaves in the dry season; if unable to do this because lack of capital won't be able to work in the rainy season
-children can also work at collected and selling leaves
-for about 3 mo. when the people are very bust in the rice fields (turum ke sawah [[?]]) laya weaving stops
men come around & buy the hats which are sold all over Aceh [[?]]
hats here are called tudung (=caping; literally "cover")
I believe this is the tudung layah village listed in 2nd yr. kal. project B (see above p 54); if so lack of 50 villagers to get 37,500 Rp each in stock & now material credits
not sure which kecamatan this is

we talked to a bicycle bakul who buys up hats + sells to Teunom and Blongpidi in S. Aceh
he's from the village and goes out 2-5 days at a time to sell he can carry 150 tudung at a time on his bicycle
he buys hats from the village women for 250 each _ resells them for 300 Rp (about)
he collects from any house that has ready stock
((thus we can calculate that he earns 50Rp x 150 = 7500 per trip)) in addition to delaing with tudung, our bicycle friend also buys up rattan vines at a forest area 40k + brings them back to sell for rims + lashings
he sells them outright, i.e. its not a put-out system
he buys 4 meter lengths of vines for 50 Rp each - sells them for 80 Rp each - can bring back a load of about 100 lengths at a time ((thus earns 3000 Rp from this))

sometimes a system called "mawah" is used - one person buys leaves + gives to antoher to make tudung -
