normally a complete wedding set takes one person a year to sulam - Abu Cat, however, can fill wedding orders in 3 mo. because she puts out the work to diff. houses
an accomplished worker can sulam 1 'until' (bunch) of gold thread a day - Abu pays 700Rp for each until worked
a square wall hanging about 2 1/2' x 2 1/2' takes 12 until the person who sulams the main motifs diff. than the person who does the edge work and puts on the backing cloth
Abu draws the motifs (pola), then gives to someone in the village to transfer onto the cloth
she takes the motifs from batik & traditional wood carvings

another area (kota Sigli; kab. Pidie) does similar sulam work but the motifs are raised by using cardboard cutouts under the gold thread

evening (( ?)) visited the Bupati of W. Acek at his kabupaten home
an incredibly stupid old-time Bupati with a walrus mustache; he will accompany us upriver to visit the milam projects because "women can't go out in the forest alone" (at least 10 Dinas Peundustrian & kabupaten officials of various sorts will be with us) - think he is also worried about something happening to a foreigner in his territory

next morning over country and 4 times by ferry to the Town of Teunom, center of milam production (see above pp 15-17)
- in addition to or rather than the demo project described in the DUP, planning to give 6-8 traditional kettles (distillation units)
we are headed for area of Kesungsabei upriver where are already +- 100 traditional kettles being operated by small slash + barn farmers
