[]KOTAH[]
next left for the field to visit Kotah desa
on the way Pak Suyitno explained that only the 20 heads of subklompoks will attend the Diklat course - also that each subklompok head is elected by the members of the subklompok - also that the PDP Diklat is a continuation of a 1977 course which Pak Suyitno himself taught

before leaving Sampang town stopped at home of a wealthy woman with a finishing operation who is head of a klompok w/a similar feeder point project
I asked Suyitno if the dying in Kotah will be centralized too - he said that during the course he will be making use of the dying equipment of 3 or 4 "informal leaders" who will also be attending the course

arriving in Kotah we were taken to the home of Pak Haji Fauzan who has a dying operation (operasi pencelupan) - appears to be a classic "godfather" village - Pak

Haji claims that all 230 producers in the village "titip" their products with him - later the industry people told me that only about 40% is titiped w/Pak Haji
titip actually appears here to mean that Pak Haji gives out the cloth, the workers wax it in their own homes - if, acc. to Pak Haji, it is a rough piece, the people will dye it themselves; if it is a finer piece, they either give it to Pak Haji to dye or they dye it using Pak Haji's facilities(not clear which) - about 25 people dye their pieces at Pak Hajis i.e. about 25 people make finer pieces
Pak Haji estimates that about 25% of the cloths made in Kotah (the roughest pieces) are still dyed using soga rather than napthal - I'm not sure whether term 'soga' refers to any natural plant dye or to a specific plant
we were shown some of these pieces and I bought 2 as samples - they are very rough, done on roughest quality cloth with free drawn motifs, but they are a beautiful brick red
