[[notes on left margin]] BLUTO (oil-pressing)
[[notes on left margin]]

next stopped by another part
of Bluto village to see the oil-
pressing industry
make both coconut & jarak
oil
jarak comes from a black seed
(pod?) - oil is mixed with kapur
and used as a couking material
for prahus
residue comes out of the press in
form of a neat round cake -
these 'empas' or residue cakes
still have a high oil content &
returns from their sale are almost
as high as returns from sale
of the oil itself
((later told of project
to introduce mechanical press -
project failed because residue
didn't have enough oil content
to be saleable as cake))
empas cake from parak oil is the
main fertilizer for the important
Madura tobacco crop, and
may also be used as fertilizer
for other lodong crops such
as corn
