Mount Merapi erupts, killing one, injuring 18 in W. Sumatra

JAKARTA (JP): One young man was killed and 18 other people including four foreigners, were injured when West Sumatra's Mt. Merapi erupted on Sunday morning.
The dead and injured victims were among dozens of people enjoying the beautiful panorama from the top of the mountain near Bukittinggi when it erupted, spraying black ash and rocks at about 9 am.
Sgt. Rinaldi from Batusangar police precinct told The Jakarta Post in a telephone interview yesterday that the dead man was identified as Abel Tasman, 20, from Padang.
The police officer said that 14 local men injured in the eruption had returned home after being treated at Ahmad Muchtar hospital in Bukittingi. The four foreign tourists, reportedly from the United States who were also injured in the disaster were sent to Yos Sudarso general hospital in Padang, according to Rinaldi.
The evening daily Suara Pembaruan reported yesterday that two of the four Americans identified as students, were sent on to Singapore for further treatment due to their serious injuries.
Rinaldi, who took part in the rescue operation on Sunday, said that the volcano had been spewing ash a few days before, indicating interruption was imminent.
He expressed concern over the fact that the young men and the foreigners climbed the mountain even though it was declared closed to the public two years ago.
The eruption reportedly panicked the visitors causing them to climb down carelessly without considering that the hot rocks being spewed by the crater could hit them.
The black ash from the eruption covered the city of Bukittinggi by making it dark for an hour.Vehicles passing through the city had to put on their lights.
Mt.Merapi which has an elevation of 2,891 meters above sea level, is located between the towns of Pandang Panjang and Batusangar. Observers said that Sunday's eruption was just like the one occuring in 1976 when volcanic ash covered most of the Tanah Datar regency. (akm)
