our interview with Aming Sasmita, "Kepala Tanaman", who has been at Patuhawattee for the last 10 yrs. - at Patuhaw are 9 living compounds, i.e.the managers complex and 8 worker kampongs
each of the 8 worker kampongs corresponds to a sub-division of the plantation
Pat. 12 K acrosss, + must remember it is only one of a no. of plantations on Patuha mtn, so whole area quite extensive
in terms of scenery an incredibly beautiful area
from  mgrs complex at Pat. can hike up to a viewpoint from which Indian ocean visable to the south
size of the plant. area, and fact that public transport does not enter plantation roads ((why)) accounts for incredible isolation of these people; this plus fact few speak Indonesian so little access to info. thru radio, newspapers, etc.
in general most male plant. workers have at least travelled as far as Garyt + have some knowledge of the outside world, but most females have never left the plant. area ((Saras, in a later visit to Pat., found that some men workers actually came from Garut - despite low earnings on plant., better than unemployment in town ))
