[[left margin]] p.1
coastal fishing villages have not shared in development to same extent as other villages, tho constitute a significant portion of rural pop. - total of 2000 families live in the 3 S.B. villages
Poffenberger identifies 3 resource bases which the people use for their subsistence:

3

a. inland rice land - 1517 ha
b. coastal brackish water ponds (tambak) - 864 ha
c. open ocean fisheries

minority of the pop. control these resources & inequities increasing due to technological innovations.

[[left margin]] p2
in wet rice area appr. 40% of farmers are tenants or buruh with rather homogeneous holdings of +/- .5 ha (5000M) per family ((meaning not clear here -- does he mean per owner or per farmer incl. share-croppers?))
in tambak area holdings more skewed w/ some Chinese families owning holdings of 300 & 600ha each - these families have begun experimenting with modern prawn aqua culture techniques based on sign. capital investment to which they have ready access ((Pof. doesn't mention here that these large holders actually live in Jak. but maintain second homes in S.B. whi resemble vacation houses))
large tambaks worked by daily wage laborers who gain little

+/- = choice of two possible values, one is the negation of the other
