[?] juragan ((intermediary who owns the equipment - - compare w/ boat owners in fishing villages who are also called juragan)) an older man who first came to Jak. from E. Java in 1931 at age of about 19 (so in 1980 he was about 70 yrs old)
p 191 worked for 3 yrs as messenger boy in air force office & then given chance to become low level Dutch soldier
when Japanese took over became HEIHO, (Jap soldier) & stayed in till 1950 when war over
then lost his battalion & became a small trader for a while
got job as security guard at govn's office but quit to become full-time farmer at K.S. in 1955 due to objec[strikethrough]tions from 2nd wife about taking 3rd wife
still farms a plot near his gubuk owned by [whiteout]
also gets income from 6 becaks he owns and from renting out gubuks to other families

his own gubuk 3 x 4 meters, but has furnishings
own corner reserved for his kris & Pak Sobari well known as dukun who can rid people of evil spirits when then have become possesed, or help people find thief when goods are stolen
ability as dukun inherited from his father who practiced in home village; from 1963-65 they recall Sukarno taking walks thru their kampong and inviting them to his house
- as one of the founders of the settlement, Pak Sobari gets ganti rugi garapan, but amts. to less income than when he had more land to farm
-plants cassava, papaya & banana; sells cassava leaves to a trader but keeps fruit for self
-bought his becaks in Aug 1980 for 130,000 each

if one of his driver's gone home to his village, Pak Sobari will drive himself (here says he is only 62) and let neighbors hide on credit
